Darla Stanley (choreographer) and Toby Twining (composer) cofounded Ensemble InterTwining in 2017 with Mac Twining and Azalea Twining to realize their vision of integrated dance and vocal works for stage and film. Their collaborators include an interdisciplinary, intergenerational group of painters, poets and filmmakers.
Raised in Texas, with family roots in country-swing and gospel, Toby Twining (composer, co-director) has traveled musically from playing for rock and jazz bands to experimental music with a range of vocal techniques from Renaissance polyphony to western overtone singing. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1986 he moved to New York, initially writing for modern dance choreographers who wanted the sounds of a new choral music. His recordings include Shaman (SONY, 1994), The Little Match Girl and Emily Dickinson’s Birthday Pizza on A Prairie Home Companion's 20th Anniversary Album (Highbridge, 1996), Chrysalid Requiem and Eurydice (Cantaloupe Music 2002 and 2011). Twining’s music has been performed by distinguished artists, including Margaret Leng Tan, Matt Haimovitz, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Young Peoples Chorus of NYC, C4 Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, and Roomful of Teeth. Twining serves currently as the Director of Music/Dance Accompanist at James Madison University’s School of Theatre and Dance.
Darla Stanley co-directs Ensemble InterTwining. Her choreography has been presented internationally and supported by The PEW Charitable Trusts, Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festivals, Edinburgh Fringe, and the Susan Hess Choreographers Project. A two-time recipient of Philadelphia’s Rocky—for choreography and the technique “whose skills you’d most like to have”— Stanley’s collaborators comprise a broad spectrum of distinguished artists: Charles O. Anderson, Alfonse Borysewicz, Daniel Phoenix Singh, Leslie Dworkin, Konstantin Kulakov, Laurie Olinder, Melanie Stewart, and Niki and Jorge Cousineau. Her performance credits include work with David Appel, Chris Burnside and Dancers, B3W Performance Group/Emily Berry, danceTactics/Keith Thompson, Drastic Action/Aviva Geismar, Jenni Hong Dance, Karen Bamonte Dance Works, Leah Stein Dance, Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre, ZeroMoving, and Siobhan Davies’ Philadelphia Bank Project.
